Give yourself a deeply soul-nourishing writing retreat in a Colorado forest monastery imbued with spirit, peace, and magic.  We meet at the Benet Hill Retreat Center for four days of writing our way into greater renewal and peace.

Spiritual writing can make us wise and more loving, no matter how each of us might define or experience spirituality. Through gentle guided writing prompts and creative conversation, we’ll come together to unearth our deepest, most genuine voices. With balanced time to wander, discover, rest, and seek solace and meaning, we’ll write across genres (poetry, fiction, memoir, songs, or drama) our way into greater wisdom, inspiration, compassion, and community. Come join us in the foothills of the Rockies for a time out of time as we dwell in unfolding mystery, beauty, and wondrous writing.

We welcome all who want to discover and recover their voice and vision through writing that feeds our souls.

Does Writing from the Soul Call Your Name?

We’ve found through our combined 50-plus years of facilitating writing workshops for many populations and venues that amazing things happen when we gather in community and listen to ourselves and each other. We also continually witness how valuable it is for people to write together across experience and background.

We uphold ground rules that give you a balance of freedom and safety. No one has to read their work aloud if they wish, and everyone is also welcome to write whatever emerges, no matter the prompt. In other words, if you want to work from our prompts (always lots of options) or on a chapter in a novel, a new song, an old set of poems, etc. the whole time, you are welcome.

We offer free discovery calls to talk about whether this retreat is a good match for you at this time. Please contact us to arrange a 15-20 minute visit on Zoom or by phone.

Lodging, Meals, and Setting

  • I arrived at the retreat during a crucial turning point in my life. Joy and Caryn created a safe and welcoming environment right from the start. It was exactly what I needed to find clarity and embrace creative exploration as I embark on new journeys.

    KIM GATELY

  • Joy’s “Writing from the Soul” retreat was a truly profound and unexpected gift. She cultivates an environment that encourages genuine inquiry and thoughtful exploration, all while guiding you forward in your writing process. She is a rare and remarkable soul.

    BECKY HENSLEY

  • If you are looking for renewed energy for your creative project, you are certain to find it by spending a weekend retreat with Joy! I’ve found new ideas, inspiration, and passion for my writing in many of Joy’s retreats, and I always walk away with both new vision and immense gratitude.

    OLIVIA SIMON

  • Joy guided us through a schedule filled with energizing activities and thoughtful conversation. My writing skills improved that weekend, because Joy always shines a light on what’s working in my pieces, and gives me useful guidance about craft. As a result of the retreat, I found the motivation and courage to keep moving forward on my creative journey.

    MAGGIE MILLER

  • From the moment I met Joy, I was hooked by her enthusiasm as a teacher of writing. She is fun, encouraging, and knowledgeable; a lover of the craft, in all its forms. Spending three days with her on retreat was such a gift. She creates a safe container for exploration and sharing, no matter the reason for writing, from the dabbler to the professional. I can’t wait to write with her again, soon.

    LAURA KIRK

  • I’m not a writer but I thoroughly enjoyed this retreat. I found that by exploring a different art form, it helped with creativity in other areas of life. I came away feeling grounded, open, and refreshed from having met such wonderful women, and from exploring parts of myself I tend to ignore in the rush of daily life. I would encourage others to allow themselves to experience these retreats as well.
